ROOTFULL COLLABORATION
The Phoebe English studio was invited to collaborate with Rootfull to utilise their innovative grown textile and transform it into a garment.
“Rootfull® merges craft with biology to grow textile from root grass seeds grow on intricately carved beeswax templates that guide the root as it develops.”
Phoebe worked with Zena Holloway, the founder of Rootfull, to grow a stitch-free dress where bouncy root-grown lace is suspended from a ripped cotton strip bodice.
The dress was created without stitching, relying solely on the growth of the roots and a series of knots and ties for construction. The root grows on templates carved from beeswax and naturally binds into the cloth as it grows. The material growing process, combining cotton fabric, water, and grass seed, takes twelve days to come to life.
